Ford Zetec is one of Ford engine company by Mazda and Yamaha developed engine construction row with 1,6 l - 2.0 l capacity and different performance levels. The name Zetec is derived from the name of the developer team, which called itself Zeta Technology. The engine family in the Escort Zeta was called original. For legal reasons late Zetec was used.
There was the engine in the following versions:
This four-stroke engine was used for the first time 1992 in Ford the Escort and Mondeo. Characteristic of the engine is a four-valve construction with 2 obenliegenden cam shafts (DOHC). Ford replaced a whole number of older engines, which had partly better consumption and immission values, by the Zetec series than the 16V Zetec (2.0 l/2,3 l DOHC of 2 valves).
It is remarkable that Ford used the trend-setting, ecological four-valve technology as first European mass manufacturer in normal customs cars (Escort, late Mondeo, Fiesta and focus). The advantages were in the good road performances and the sales promotion by that allegedly "modern" engine concept. OPEL pulled only 1994 tight, Volkswagen even only 1996, although these had years four-valve engines in the program since center of the 80"´er.
In particular similar Zetec s (to 1.7 l), which both in the focus as well as in the Fiesta was blocked, represents a complete revision. Thus the crank case instead of in a grey cast iron block in an aluminum alloy were implemented. The Zetec r engines used in the traffic were developed not, like the Zetec r, which was used in the formula 1 by various teams such as Minardi, clean, Stewart and Tyrell in the time interval from 1994 to 1998, by Zeta Technology, but by Yamaha.
The Zetec engines was used until approx. 2000 in the focus II, replaced afterwards however from the Duratec engine row.
