The Uhrenmanufaktur Zenith was created in the year 1865 on initiative of Georges Favre Jacot in Switzerland as "Fabrique of the Billodes".

In the year 1911 the company is converted into a corporation with name "Fabrique of the Montres Zenith". The name Zenith decreases/goes back to the following occurence: One evening completes Georges Favre Jacot a clockwork, which seems to be perfect him than all past. When it steps shortly thereafter into the asterisk-clear night outside and arranges its view to the sky, celestial mechanics appear to it like the play of the wheels and tap of a clockwork and it decides to designate its new clockwork and also his Manufaktur to the highest point of the universe: ''' Zenith '''. In addition it, suitably the name, selects a five-pointed star as escutcheon.

On 10 January of the yearly 1969 Zenith presented that, since 1967 with high pressure developed, first automatic Chronographenwerk El Primero, and won thereby the prestigious race with the companies Breitling and Hamilton

The "El Primero" is considered today as that most well-known work of its class; it is clearly superior to the comparable works Lemania 5100 and Valjoux 7750 of ETA due to its clear, aesthetically convincing conception, its high frequency of 36000 half oscillations per minute and its high
