Under the term Zaibatsu (jap. wrtl. wealthy Klan) one understands (Japanese) a mixing company global acting. A better translation would be "holding companies in the family estate". The term by its use in different Cyberpunk works into the 1980er years in the USA popular and designation today each asiatic firm conglomerate. An example of a Zaibatsu is the Korean company Daewoo, which operates dockyards beside the automobile business also.

The first Zaibatsu developed after the Meiji restoration (1868) and rang the industrialization in Japan. The first Zaibatsu was created by the family Mitsui, since the second half the 17. Century (Edo time) successfully with their short goods shops and cash transactions in Edo, Kyoto and Osaka fortune accumulated.

The Zaibatsu does not exist today in its original form no more. They were smashed after the Second World War from American crew power and converted to entrepreneurial groups (keiretsu).

They are comparable with the Jaebeols in Korea.
