Yawl is simultaneous the designation of a process modelling language and an acronym with the meaning Yet Another Workflow LANGUAGE. Parts of the Yawl software Framework were published under the Apache software License and the GNU Lesser general Public License. Yawl is thus an open SOURCE product. The Yawl software Framework can be arranged as Workflow management system (WfMS).

The Yawl software Framework consists of a Workflow Ablaufumgebung (the Yawl engine), a Worklist component, a Web service Invoker and a SMS Invoker component, it permits business processes or subtasks via SMS to activate. Besides the Yawl software Framework contains a XForms component, which makes it possible, of HTML-based work lists to generate automatically.

Against the usual business specification languages as for example BPML or XPDL, with YAWL the attempt was undertaken to support all Workflow Patterns, which were specified to date by the Workflow Patterns initiative. By this proceeding Yawl is a very expression-strong process specification language.

Process notation

At first sight Yawl resembles the notation way of the UML or from the BPMI suggested Business Process Modeling notation. The Yawl authors point out however that the visual representation of a Yawl graph is based primarily on the mathematical bases of the Petri nets. Precisely expressed a Yawl graph therefore an extension of the Petri nets represent, which were adapted particularly on the domain of the Workflow management. Insbesonderedie formally provable characteristics of Petri nets, which are missing to other diagram techniques usually, are to be used here, in order to be able to define demonstrably expirations of correct. In order to be able to understand circumstances better, is referred to the following illustration. It illustrates the process, which was necessary, in order to provide this article.
