There were yard astronomers until some centuries ago on nearly all king and emperor yards, in addition, at the yards of other princes and many higher aristocrats.

As a rule they functioned as advisors and as teachers, often also as astro+lied - which was linked with the astronomy nearly always in the pre-Christian time. With scientifically interested rulers a yard astronomer had - who was also sometimes a yard mathematician - often one politically or culturally very fastidious task.

In the old Babylon and in China the astronomy had already early a high value. In Mesopotamien and Persia there was the conditions of the which a mixture between astronomer, Meteoroligist or Astrologe represented, and partly also priests were. Often it is accepted that the Biblical report on the star of the ways (in griech. Original Magoi) on such persons is based. In old China the yard astronomers were responsible for it, "right instant" for important actions to superior - which the Greeks in the sense of emotional intelligence called "Cairo".

In later time in particular in the so-called discoverer time starting from approximately 1350 - many yard astronomers were concerned with navigation (by no means only with their astronomical part), with the predetermination of planet courses or with the production of maps of the world. Also developing many pairs from ground connection and celestial globes is working some yard mathematician or - to owe astronomers, because the connection between astronomical and geographical data and computations on globes were with same radius particularly surely, rapid and economical - completely to be silent from the requirement of the aesthetics or the art.

Within some ranges the position of former yard astronomers can be compared with that by today's government advisors or by chairmen of governmentnear functional commissions. In the modern times they were often also university teachers and/or member of the respective academy. In England the respective director of observatory of the Royal Greenwich Observatory was at the same time a yard astronomer with the title Astronomer Royal.
