Wood pests organisms are called, which are due to their biological characteristics able to damage or destroy wood. Certain insect and kinds of mushroom have the by far greatest importance as wood pests. Besides wood under special conditions can be e.g. attacked also by bacteria or Bohrmuscheln.

To the animal wood pests mainly some representatives of the support beetles, like Mulmbock, belong large oak support and longhorn beetle in our widths, or in addition, the common gnawing beetle, better admits wood worm under the designation. It distinctive between fresh wood and drying wood insects. First can develop only in the living tree or in the freshly wood, during drying wood insects - as the name already says - also dry wood to strike to be able, thus e.g. furniture or blocked wood in roof structures and half timbered houses.
