Ammunition factory

The work reached the high point during the 1. World war. The Feuerwerksanstalt was of 1914 - 1918 the center of the enormous K.u.K. Arms plants into and around Viennese new city with further works in Berne village, Hirtenberg, Enzesfeld, Blumau and Theresienfeld. However the work extended over nearly 3 km on which 635 building objects was present. About 40 km of standard gauge tracks, over 70 km narrow-gauge railways and over 26 km concrete roads opened the plants. The staff rose from 5000 in the year 1914 to over 40.000 in the year 1918, which had to carry ever 70 working hours out per week.

Intermediate wartime

Starting from at the end of of 1918 under supervision of the allied advice the new State of Austria administered the area. End of 1919 most plants of the ammunition factory were integrated into "the national industrial plants ". The buildings stood starting from 1922 empty, however with hope for Nachnutzung and settling by new industrial companies were waited and maintained. Up to the settlement of some smaller companies several large-scale projects smashed themselves because of corrupt, speculative machinations of the involved ones and the using world economic crisis.

As leftover somewhat far produced north the "Hirtenberger cartridge factory" further ammunition and 1920 by a fire was completely destroyed and 1924 rebuilt. From this the Hirtenberger Defence of system developed after an eventful history 2004.

Notion camp of the Austrian

Starting from October 1933 the government of the totalitarian (Austrofaschismus) furnished a resounding of the work a notion camp, after German model, in some for dissidents and exponents of the forbidden parties NSDAP and starting from 1933 and the social-democratic party starting from 1934.

After the conversation of the Federal Chancellor Kurt Schuschniggs with Adolf Hitler in February 1938 the camp was finally dissolved. In March 1938 the barracks found the camp however again for the temporary arrest of austrofaschistischen functionaries on 2 April 1938 were use already closed and the barracks down-burned. One shifted the remaining Austrian prisoners into the KZ Dachau.

The Second World War

At the time of the connection to the German Reich to 12. March 1938 the buildings were still nearly completely present and like nearly the entire infrastructure in a perfect condition - so that the area offered itself as ideal location as air park for the nearby air base Viennese new city.

Thus after resolution of the highest Air Force places in the summer 1938 with the adaptation of the plants to the air park XVII Viennese new city was begun - .

The plants became with a large bomb attack of the American Air Force to 29. May 1944 of majority destroys, which destroys remainders in the last March week 1945 blown up and/or during the following fighting with the Red Army.

Post-war period

The large rubble field did not have also for Soviet crew power a meaning, all still useful as building material was again-used. Larger building fragments as well as some functionless chimneys become were blown up in the late 40's.
