The world social forum is a Gegenveranstaltung to the summits of the world trade organization (World Trade Organization), the Davoser world economy forum and the annual world economy summits of the heads of the government of the G8-Staaten. It took place in the years 2001 to 2003 in postage Alegre (Brazil) and 2004 in Mumbai (India) and a symbol for the movement of the critics of the neoliberalen globalization became annual. 2005 took place the world social forum again in postage Alegre. During it 2006 in Africa, Asia and Latin America takes place at the same time, is planned, this time for 2007 central world social forum in Africa.

The meetings stand under the slogan:

Over outro mundo poss­vel.

Another world is possible.

Another World is possible.

Un autre moons est possible.

Goals

With the world-wide meetings is among other things intended to point alternatives out to the model for further discussion of the global Neoliberalismus prevailing in the media and their elaboration promote. On the level it is to express to the symbol politics that there is also another globalization, which moves apart from World Trade Organization and G8-Gipfeln. Interlacing socially engaged persons and organizations is to express thereby also that a globalization - instead of a Deregulierung for the advantage of the stronger one - can mean also conscious thinking and acting for the well-being of the whole world. Less the world social forum is to decide concrete measures or adopt resolutions, but it serves the co-ordination and exchange of experience. The large spectrum of different groups opens on the one hand the chance on different points of view and a broad interest exchange. On the other hand however it lets really common positions appear illusory.

A problem of the forum is the democratic authentication lacking of the participants.

The Charter of the principles from the year 2001 defines the identity of the world social forum (WSF): "The world social forum is an open meeting place for reflecting thinking, for which democratic debate of ideas, for which formulation of requests, for free exchange of experiences and for interlacing effective actions of groups and movements of the civil company, stands which by the capital or any other form of the imperialism oppose the Neoliberalismus and the world domination and engage themselves for the structure of a planetary society, in which humans in the center. "

The movement resulted from the initiative of different international organizations, which came out for their part from the collection of the Zapatisten in Chiapas (Mexico) in the year 1994. Indios from this region revolted against new forms of the suppression, which stood in connection with the globalization. The new organizations and movements (e.g. Peoples global Action) wanted to continue the fight of the Zapatisten and to bring their demands internationally to the language.

The 3. World social forum took place of 23. until 28 January 2003 in postage Alegre. More than 100,000 humans participated in it, among them delegated from 5.717 different organizations. Different regional forums had gone ahead: in August 2002 the Argentine social forum in Buenos Aires, in November 2002 the European social forum in Florenz, in December 2002 the African social forum in Ethiopia, in January 2003 the asiatic social forum in India and the Pan Amazoni social forum in (Brazil). A multiplicity of further regional, local and thematischer forums followed. Thematically 2003 the threat realized a little later stood on the part of the USA in the foreground to occupy the Iraqi territory. The forum became the starting point for the largest mass demonstrations of mankind history in favor of the peace.

With 4. World social forum from 16. to 21,1. the 2004 in Mumbai were inside present between 80.000 and 100.000 globalization critics/. Under the many meetings and topics, which take place on the forum traditionally, the discussion represented a special emphasis around the discriminating function of the Indian box nature.

At the same time the meeting Mumbai Resistance took place in Mumbai. Their organizers accuse to the world social forum that this not concretely enough is aligned to resistance actions.

5. World social forum took place of 26. until 31 January 2005 again in postage Alegre. 120.000 participation discussed topics such as future of the water or solidary economy.

2006 find the WSF of 24. - 29 January at three places world-wide at the same time instead of, in Bamako (Mali/Africa), in carat ski (Pakistan/Asia) and in Caracas (Venezuela/America). An alternative social forum takes place likewise in Caracas.

Further social forums

Besides there are also regional social forums like the European social forum (ESF) or the Austrian social forum ASF. For July 2005 for the first time a social forum is in Germany planned. These meetings offer the possibility of discussing within smaller framework the problems and of compiling concrete proposals for solution. All regional social forums work on the basis of the Charter of the principles of the world social forums.
