Contrary to a business process, which describes a consequence of activities with the goal of an achievement production, a work routine (English Workflow) is a pre-defined succession of activities computer-aided running off. A business process is supported by a IT-system, supplied with necessary data and in accordance with one in the system deposited default/algorithm completed. The goal is here less a documentation for an organization or their coworker than a possible (part) automation of the execution.

Operational sequence models are to help thereby to guarantee the optimal integration of most diverse applications (text processings, spread-sheet analyses, data bases etc.) into operational operational sequences. For this a Workflow management system is used. This is a software system, which makes the execution possible of Workflows, by steering the Workflow instances according to a given pattern illustrated in the computer and for it needed data and applications makes available. The task of a Workflowmanagementsystems can be expressed in such a way: It concerns to coordinate, who (roles), which (task), when (process) and as (environment) it works on.
