William lion (* 14 November 1814 in Olvenstedt; "† 1886 in Meran) were a German physician and left liberal politician. 1848 became lion vice-president of the Frankfurt national assembly and 1849 parliament president of the trunk parliament.

Life

William lion was born, as a son of a and a Kantors, in the today's Magdeburger quarter Olvenstedt. Lion studied in the cathedral High School in Magdeburg. Starting from 1834 it was certified as nationally examined Wundarzt and served three years as a company surgeon. Subsequently, it studied medicine in resounds, attained a doctorate and established themselves starting from 1840 in Calbe (Saale) as a practical physician. By its liberal attitude and its exemplary social commitment he had acquired a high reputation in Calbe and had delegated themselves 1848 to the delegate of the constituency Calbe and Jerichow I into the first German parliament, the national assembly in Frankfurt/Main. Lion belonged to the 33 delegates those, on 3 April 1849, Friedrich William IV. the emperor crown offered. That one rejected however. To the advance of the reaction 1849 most delegates returned on instruction of their governments to their homeland. Only the 114 democrats and link liberal around the again selected parliament president William lion stayed as trunk parliament so mentioned, which pulled to Stuttgart.

After the defeat lion was accused of the revolution and condemned to lifelong detention. However the escape succeeded to it over Switzerland into the USA, where it was active eight years in New York town center as physician and an entrepreneur. When the Prussian amnesty for political condemned ones stepped 1861 into force, it returned to Calbe. 1863 became lion of delegates of the Prussian Lower House and starting from 1871 of realm tag delegates in Berlin have it a personal portion of the development of the reform suggestions for the unit of the German Reich and for an economic and a liberal up-to-date home policy. Loewes used the words in the Prussian Lower House once: It blows a sharp wind at the Prussian major corner, which became near proverbial. He meant with the fact that the places in the Prussian army would be occupied by the major upward exclusively by aristocrats. As a chairman by seniority of the German realm Reich he turned into ever more on the positions of Bismarck of a revolution "from above".

Lion withdrew itself 1881 from the active policy. It died during a cure stay in and in Berlin was buried, where this very day on the old person pc. Kirchhof is in Berlin its tomb.

Lion is honour citizen of its effect city Calbe, which it in honours, which renamed at that time most important road after it.
