William Ernest Castle (* 25 October 1867 in Ohio; "† 3 June 1962) was an US-American Genetiker.

It was born on a farm in Ohio as one of six children and had already as a boy large interest in the planting and animal world. After its conclusion to the Denison University in Granville, Ohio he became a latin teacher to the Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas. Here it published a first writing over the bloom plants of the environment. Its interest in biology caused it 1892 to go to the Harvard University where it turned the Zoologie. It attained a doctorate 1985 and informed afterwards in each case one year long Zoologie at the University OF Wisconsin and at the Knox college in Galesburg in Illinois.

1896b married he Clara Sears Bosworth, with which he got three sons in the following years. Castle decreased/went back 1897 after Harvard and concentrated on Embryologie. After 1900 the Mendel laws was rediscovered, it turned to the genetics. It was first, that the baptizing couch Drosophila more melanogaster than investigation object used. Its work caused Thomas Hunt Morgan to use the flies. It turned however again to the mammals and worked particularly with mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs, also today still as experimental animals used the werden.1908 pulled Castle biology in Jamaical Plains, applied from the museum for comparative Zoologie into the Bussey institute for. 1916 it was one of the ten founders of the magazine Genetics.

Castle went 1962, when the Bussey institute was closed, as to the university from California, where a place had been offered to him as a researcher for mammal genetics.

Its work covers studies for the transmission of Albinismus (1903) and to the Mendel laws. It publishes 242 articles, three books and a laboratory manual for Genetiker.
