White substance (lat. Substantia alba) one calls the parts of the central nervous system, which consist of line courses (nerve fibers). It is against-placed to the grey substance. The white colouring results from the myelin sheaths of the nerve fibers.

In back Mark fits the white substance of the grey outside and becomes macroscopic in front strand (Funiculus anterior), to side strand (Funiculus lateralis) and Hinterstrang (Funiculus posterior) partitions.

In the brain the white substance lies inside and by the grey substance is surrounded. Into the white substance however also areas with grey substance are, thus accumulations of nerve cell bodies stored. One calls these central areas (Nuclei).
