Werner Arber (* 3. June 1929 in be Swiss biologist and Genetiker.
Arber studied chemistry and physics in Zurich from 1949 to 1953 and attained a doctorate 1958 in Geneva. it received a Professur at the University of Geneva to 1965. Since 1971 Arber is a professor at the bio center of the University of Basel. Its most important spheres of activity are the bacterial restriction systems and mobile genetic elements (INSERT ion elements, Transposons).
For the discovery of the restriction enzymes and their application in the molecular genetics received Werner Arber, Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Othanel Smith 1978 the Nobelpreis for physiology or medicine.
