The Washburn Langford Doane expedition took place 1870 by the area of the today's Yellowstone national park in the USA. The national park was created not least owing to the realizations of this expedition. It deepened the knowledge from the Folsom expedition of 1869 and formed the basis for the Hayden expedition of 1871.

The Washburn Langford Doane expedition was arranged with the purpose to verify the frittered away reports over the Yellowstone area which were to be heard of Trappern, Mountain Men as well as of participants of the Folsom expedition.

The expedition consisted of 19 usually prominent men from Montana, aforementioned from the inspector general of the Federal State, Henry Dana Washburn. Together with the men participated forty horses and Maultiere as well as the dog "„Booby "“. The oldest participant was Truman Everts with its 54 years. The group took supplies for 30 days with itself, as well as a tent, weapons and ammunition.

Route

The expedition left away Ellis after delays only on 22 August 1870. It entered the area of the today's national park in the north. On the second day they noticed Absarokee Indians, which observed the group. In the consequence the participants should get no more Indians during the expedition to face.

After they had passed the Tower case - gave it to that the names - discovered it a mountain, which they baptized Mount Washburn. They followed the Yellowstone River to the south, met the three Lower of case, Crystal of case and Upper of case. Samuel Hauser measured both the Tower case and the Lower and Upper of case with a gewichtsbehangenen cord. Before they reached the Yellowstone Lake, they saw the first Geysir. They baptized it Mud Geysir.

The Yellowstone Lake they went around along the east and south bank. On 9 September Everts of the group erred. Long they looked for one week in vain Everts. Subsequently, three men separated from the main group, in order to hold further according to Everts view; the remaining continued the expedition. They pulled to the west in the area of the many Geysire. They were particularly impressed by the regular eruptions of the old Faithful. They observed it two days long and gave it the name finally. Afterwards they traveled northward far up to the Madison River. They followed this and left on 22 September the area of the today's national park in the west. On the next morning long Ford rode after Virginia town center and informed there that they had lost Everts. Meanwhile the military escort under second lieutenant applied Doane to away the Ellis, in order to introduce steps there to the search for Everts.

On 27 September the main group returned to its homeland. The three-search troop arrived on 2 October, without Everts to have found. Everts could be saved finally on 16 October von Jack Baronett, to a local resident Scout.

The realizations of the expedition were up-sucked and published by newspapers and magazines generally speaking country avid; this completely contrary to the descriptions from the preceding Folsom expedition.
