Walther Herwig (* 25 February 1838 in Arolsen; "† 16 December 1912 in Berlin was a Prussian administrative lawyer, the Doyen of the German Hochseefischerei and the founder of the German exploration of the sea.

Career/development

Herwig studied Goettingen starting from 1856 jurisprudence at the university, where it became member in the Corps Hannovera. It continued its studies at the Universities of Leipzig, Freiburg ith break and Berlin and occurred after the conclusion the Prussian civil service. In the year 1869 he became district office man in its hometown Arolsen. 1878 land advice in Ahaus and later in Marienwerder. He was vice-president of the Provinzial training and Medizinalkollegiums in Berlin and became 1889 president of the monastery chamber in Hanover. From 1879-93 it belonged to the Prussian Lower House. Starting from 1895 Council of State it received the honour doctor of the University of Kiel (Dr. to 1896 phil. h.c.). it stepped 1902 as Wirkl. Secret upper government advice in Hanover into the retirement and lived starting from 1907 again in Berlin.

Meaning for the Hochseefischerei

Walther Herwig was one the founder of the German high deep-sea fishing association and promoted end 19. Century the development that up to then, apart from whale-catching, only before the coast operated fishery. It was expanded also since fish-rich waters of the North Atlantic. For this starting from 1880 the first German Fischdampfer were built after English model. First after it designated ship, the 1888 built Fischdampfer president Herwig, was lost however 1898 before the coast of Iceland. Herwig used itself in this time of the structure of a German high deep-sea fishing fleet in particular for social reconciliation in relation to the crews of the ships and achieved an appropriate basic supply of the members Fischer, who remained on lake. It justified the German exploration of the sea and became 1902 with its separating from the public administration president of the central committee for the international exploration of the sea. To the honouring memory the Federal Republic of Germany gave its name so far three to fishery research ships. At present the Walther Herwig III for the federal research institute fishery drives on waters of north and Baltic Sea as well as the North Atlantic.
