The ship name Walther Herwig is a tradition name from in the meantime three German research ships of the fishery research.

FFS Walther Herwig (I)

The first Walther Herwig was a of 1987 BRT from the year 1963, which 1973 in Anton Dohrn were renamed.

The second walter Herwig was used 1973-93 and had 2250 BRT.

Since that time the Walther Herwig III essentially is as Forschungschiff of the federal research institute for fishery in the North Atlantic in the use. It is bereedert by the Federal Institution for agriculture and nutrition.

Name giver of all three ships is the promoter and "Doyen" of the exploration of the sea Walther Herwig, (1838-1912), an administrative lawyer in realm services, who in outstanding measure around the German Hochseefischerei and in particular also around the supply for that there active Fischer and Seeleute and their families made himself earned.
