Walkman [] a mark of the company is Sony for portable cartridge playing equipment. In the German colloquial language the label name is in the meantime a term monopoly and serves as name for the product kind (independent of the manufacturer). In Austria Sony were therefore extracted the rights at the mark.
In its autobiography the Sony Akio Morita (1921-1999) maintained, to be inventors Walkman. However German Andreas Pavel similar equipment in several countries had already announced 1977 to the patent. The patent specification describes its Stereobelt as "small plant for the high-quality rendition of hearing events".
In July 1979 Sony with its first Walkman TPS-L2 came on the market. By devices with the label name Walkman approx. 330 million pieces were sold.
Sony denied long time the requirements of Pavel, also several courts answered in the negative its requirement on royalties. After the death of Akio Morita closed Sony 2004 however a comparison out of court with Andreas Pavel.
Into the 1990er years solved portable CD players (frequently also called Discman) Walkman off; today it counts as a forerunner also from MP3-Playern.
With the label name Sony and/or the portable radio daughter Sony Ericsson brings Walkman a new Handy line (Sony Ericsson W800i, Sony Ericsson W550i) on the market (August 2005). These are a cross between MP3-Player and telephone. In addition Sony sells recently also to MP3-Player as Walkman, e.g. the NW-A3000.
