Wacom is the largest manufacturer of Pen Tablets. Wacom CO. Ltd. 1983 in Japan were created. The company name consists of the syllables "wa" (Japanese for harmony) and to the abbreviation "com" for computers.

1984 brought Wacom out the first diagram tray with a slack pin. 1987 followed a Pen Tablet, whose pin without battery or cable gets along. Until today the "Penabled" is - technology singularly, since she was patented by the manufacturer.

Characteristics

Beside the usual (see in addition: ) Some more or less meaning functions are diagram tray to functions of a diagram tray such as pressure sensitivity with Tablets of this manufacturer.

Penabled technology

The Penabled technology makes a drawing with cable and for sound-powered pin possible on the Wacom a Pen Tablet. Thus the pins are ergonomic (natural weight) and batteries do not have to be renewed.

The transmission of the data (pressure, switch status, Tool ID) is made by electromagnetic resonance (induction). Electromagnetic waves are sent by the Tablet and sent back by the pin. Under the surface are horizontal and vertically aligned antennas, which send every 20 microseconds between ""- and "receipt mode "change.

An electromagnetic signal energizes a resonant circuit from coil and condenser in the pin inside to oscillations. The resonant circuit in the pin point supplies the pin with river and serves at the same time also as transmitter. The received signal goes over a modulator into the chip, where also the information from the pressure sensor is received as from the side switch. From there they arrive with the Tool ID (see below) into the modulator, which returns a signal to the resonant circuit in the point. From there it is sent back to the tray.

A simple example of the operational principle is the Klavierstimmer, which uses a tuning fork, in order to tune a piano. If the tuning fork is brought to a vibrating piano wire - with same frequency - into the proximity, it borrows from the vibrating string energy, swings along and produces a clay/tone. So similarly also the Wacom pin begins to swing, if it approaches the tray surface, produced then automatically a frequency and returns it to the Tablet. As soon as the Tablet hears, locates the produced frequency ""it the pin with high accuracy. The Tablet sends then to the computer the information of the coordinates, pressure strength and inclination as well as a signal, which indicate whether the straight pin point or the Radierer at the pin end is used.

Flexible drivers

Apart from the Penabled technology the drivers are a further reason, why Wacom Pen Tablets belong to the usually-used. Thus the driver makes possible for kompfortablem handling two screens and gives to the user full control of the user-specific allocation up to six of the input modes (pressure sensitivity, two keys at the side, a "Radierer" at the end of the pin, angle of inclination and a wheel).

Inclination sensitivity

In some product rows the Tablet recognizes the inclination of the pin in an angle of +/-60"° on the x and Z-axis. In Corel Painter can be steered such a realistically acting Airbrush as well as other tools reacting to angles of inclination.

Touch Strips and express key

(With Intuos, Cintiq and graph Irish 4) Touch Strips are for example with the Intuos the fields on the right of and to the left of the indication surface (see picture), which react except on contact of the pin also to the vertical contact by a finger. Thus outstanding the enlargement and reduction in a picture can be steered. Also the intuitive change of the brush size would be possible.

The express keys can be occupied - in the form of key contractions - with arbitrary functions (e.g. memory, retrogressive, various tools, etc.). According to standard they are occupied with keys such as alto and SHIFT. Also different Tablethersteller offers a similar function on for its Tablets.

Tool ID

The function of the Tool ID (tool identification) is from use if several pins (see optional pins for the Intuos) are used. Each pin has its own Tool ID, so that for example on use of the Airbrushes also in the program of the Airbrush one selects.

Product range

The Pen Tablets in the selling hands small indication surface ("PenPartner", "Volito") for presentations and laptops to 8*5 cm from one approx. over a tray aligned for amateur photographers ("graph Irish 4": approx. 12*9 cm/20*15 cm with 2000 dpi dissolution of coordinate) up to Pen Tablets me 5,080 lpi dissolution of coordinate, 1,024 stages pressure sensitivity in sizes of A6 to A3 ("Intuos 3").

Intuos 3

  • Active surface: 127 x 101 mm/203.2 x 152.4 mm/616 x 445.5 x 37 mm
  • Pressure sensitivity: 1.024
  • Dissolution of coordinate: 5.080 lpi
  • Accuracy pin: 0.25 mm
  • Maximum founder identification height: 6 mm
  • Inclination sensitivity: 60"°

Characteristics of the Intuos 3

  • The Intuos 3 has eight express keys, on which one can store most diverse functions.
  • Two Touch Strip automatic controllers offer functions like for example in and Auszoomen in a document.
  • There are various exchangeable pin points:
    • Standard top speed: Is appropriate for all work and has a slight resistance on the Tabelt
    • Stroke Pen of pin pits: It is fitted with springs and offers such a better tactile feedback
    • Felt Pen pin point: Possess a larger resistance on the Tablet
  • Via changes of the pin (if several available) likewise the change of the tool takes place in the program.
  • Intuos 3 has the international honor "talks DOT Design award for high Design quality "within the range product Design Design of the center North Rhine-Westphalia received.
    • Airbrush (optional). A pin, which is formed like a Airbrush and a wheel has for control.
    • Kind marker (optional). A pin in form and function of a traditional felt-tip pen with tapered point. Particularly for designers and 360"° rotationssensitiv.
    • Ink Pen (optional). A ball-point pen, which writes completely normally and transfers the movement at the same time digitally.
    • In aspect ratio 16/10 available and so optimally for the enterprise with screens in this aspect ratio.

    Cintiq and PL-710

The Cintiq and PL-710 consist of a LCD monitor, on which one can draw directly with the pin. This entails a better hand eye co-ordination ((see classical working)).

Entire 21.3 " (432 mm x 324 mm, with the Cintiq) and/or 17 " (with the PL-710) LCD Bidschirm can be used as work surface and is arbitrarily set upable. The Cinitiq addresses itself, like the Intuos 3, to needs (see specifications), whereby the PL-710 is addressed to the overhead projector rather to lecturer (University of, advanced training, etc.) as replacement. Advantage is here the connection of computer-assisted presentation and handwritten notes or something similar.

Thus e.g. the university uses Karlsruhe within the range computer science Wacom Cintiq Pen Tablets for their students and lecturers/inside in several lecture-rooms, in order to transfer so the lecture into real time into a second lecture-room, which is along-pursued there. Here one could come by it with increasing student numbers and place lacking by right.

    Supporting software

In principle one can serve each kind of software with a Pen Tablet, but the following applications support particularly the functions (inclination recognition, Airbrush of a Wacom Pen Tabelts particularly:

    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Z-Brush
    • GIMP
    • Corel Painter
    • Adobe Illustrator
    • Alias Maya
    • Alias StudioTools
    • Maxon Cinema 4D/Bodypaint
