The vegetative nervous system (VNS), also viszerales (and/or viscerales) or autonomous nervous system (TO) mentioned, form the peripheral nervous system of vertebrate animals together with the somatic nervous system. The "autonomy" refers to the fact that this subsystem of arbitrary control is extracted from untrained humans by consciousness. It controls the vital functions ("vital functions"), like heart impact, respiration, blood pressure, digesting and metabolism. Also different organs or organ systems like the Sexualorgane and the blood vessel system as well as the internal eye muscles are affected by the vegetative nervous system. Both the central and the peripheral nervous system possess vegetative portions.

Contrary to the Sympathikus and the Parasympathikus the enterische nervous system is subordinate not so much to the regularization by the central nervous system. It functions to a large extent independently.
The pleasant and the parasympathische system possess antagonistic effects on their effector organs. Mediated during the Sympathikus rather work-promoting (, the Parasympathikus releases ergotrope) effects predominantly recovery-promoting (trophotrope) effects. This description is suitable however only for rough orientation. Thus work sympathetic and parasympathsiches nervous system in some organs also synergistically.
Arbitrary control of some functions of the vegetative nervous system by consciousness can be learned with different methods. Here are only some mentioned:
