The enterprise Vorwerk was created 1883 as Barmer carpet factory Vorwerk & CO in Wuppertal. It drives household appliances out (in particular vacuum cleaners) over independent commercial agents (technical advisers so mentioned) in the direct sales (thus at the entry door). In addition belong carpets, installation kitchens and Kosmetika to the business fields in over 50 countries of active exempt private company.

From the textile enterprise Vorwerk & CO. developed in the course of the decades a diversified international entrepreneurial group with approximately 46,000 coworkers world-wide (conditions 2002). For the year 2003 a conversion of 1.635 billion euro was indicated for a record gain, which profit height traditionally not published.

The direct sale of household appliances forms the emphasis. Vorwerk is associated in many areas of Germany for a long time strongly with entry door business. In the year 2003 4400 commercial agents for the enterprise were active. The documentary film the flower of the housewife (1999), who with some success in German program cinemas ran, their work.

In May 2004 the American Kosmetikhersteller Jafra was transferred.

  • (1883-1907) The Barmer carpet factory Vorwerk & CO of the brothers Carl (1847-1907) and Adolf Vorwerk was created. In the same year the brothers separated again and Carl Vorwerk passed on the company alone. 1903 took over the son of Carl Vorwerk the line of the company. Carl jr. (1878-1904) died however some months after.
  • (1907-1930) August Mittelsten separate (1871-1955), Carl's son-in-law, took over the line.
  • (1930-1943) Werner Mittelsten separate, of August son, took over the line of the company and introduces the direct sale. 1929 were born the Kobold. The chief engineer E. Gorissen develops a leistungstarken vacuum cleaner from a Grammophon drive assembly.
  • (1943-1969) The sons of Werner, Erich and Werner, took over the line of the company together. After Werner jr. , passed on Erich the company died alone.
  • (1969 - until today) Dr. Mittelsten separate, son from Werner, took over the line of the company.
