The Volvo series of 900 designates passenger car models of the elevated middle class of the company Volvo.

Type designation

The 900er series subdivided itself into the type designations 940 and/or 960; after 1997 in S90 and/or V90.

If the type designations 940 and 960 stood still to a large extent for the number of cylinders of the engine to 1996, then starting from model year 1997 the Volvo internal type designation was standardized: All 960er combination was called "V" and all 960er sedans as "S". The two digit number following in each case symbolizes the respective series (e.g. S40, since that V70,"Â…). An optical differentiation did not take place here.

The model designation 940 was maintained however for the more weakly motorized, 4-zylindrigen of models of the 900er series still up to the end of production.

Historical

The 900er series was introduced to 1990 as advancement of the 700er series and replaced these completely in the year 1992.

The 960er of models was as far as possible identically constructed with the 940er models, possessed however equipment with higher order and always only with the strongest petrol engines was offered. Diesel engines there were only with 940. With introduction of model year 1995 a clear optical differentiation was introduced between the 960er and the 940er models. The changes were so extensive (among other things completely changed front portion with improved aerodynamics), which one speaks generally also of the Volvo 960 type II.

While the production of the 940 sedan found a in this country sudden end, combination, although at this time technically becomes outdated, enjoyed of the 940 still to production end of large popularity. When 1998 the building of the 900er series was stopped, this meant the end of the rear propulsion era with Volvo.

Numbers, data, facts

Just like with the 700er series the wheel base remained with 2770 mm also in the 900er series. The external length varies depending upon execution between 4844 mm and 4871mm. Besides there was the S90 Executive, a version with extended wheel base and an overall length over 5 meters. Likewise some special vehicles on basis of the 900er series, about ambulance or corpse funeral car, manufactured by Volvo, exist. The unloaded weight lies between 1327 kg up to 1570 kg. The permissible braked trailer weight amounted to up to 2,0 t. Available space offers l load volume with up to 2200 with the combination also to today hardly reached values.

Altogether approx. 670,000 passenger cars of the 900er series of built, of it approx. 280,000 combinations and 390,000 sedans.
