Volvo S40/V40 are model designations for passenger car a model series of the company Volvo.

General information

The S40 and/or V40 is a middle class model of Volvo and replaced 1995 the Volvo 440/460.

The combination got as designation a "V40". The otherwise identically constructed sedan had the type designation "S40". The originally planned designations "S4" and "V4" had to be supplemented, because those had already let AUDI AG protect the designation "S4" for its sport models of the AUDI A4. "S" stands for "Sedan", "V" for "Versatility".

As platform served a community project with the Mitsubishi of engine corporation on the same platform its model Carisma produced. Production location both for the Volvo V40/S40 and for the Mitsubishi Carisma was in Netherlands Born.Die co-operation with the discharge of the respective model was terminated.

The Volvo S40 was replaced at the end of of 2003 from the new Volvo S40. The successor of the V40 took time until spring 2004 and got the model designation V50.

Technical

At first two Otto engines with 116 HP or 136 HP as well as a turbo Diesel engine with 90 HP were available.

After the introduction on the market the engine pallet was however removed already briefly upward. As point motorizing 2.0 an l capacity of 4 cylinders turbo Otto engine with up to 200 HP was available; the type designation read simply T4. The T4 had a maximum speed of 235 km/h and sprintete from 0 to 100 km/h within 7.3 seconds. This was however for only possible experienced drivers, because despite a standard anti-slip regulation the front wheel drive was overloaded with engine performance with such maneuvers. The late ESP standard with the T4 (Volvobezeichnung: DSA) defused such situations.

Completely the call as manufacturers of safe cars following, the V40 was ex factory equipped with a complete Sicherheitsaustattung: Front & Seitenairbags (first car of the world with 4 Airbags), (starting from the Facelift additionally also Kopfairbags) and an anti-skid system always participated.

All V40 had 5 front wheel drive and a course transmission. When desired also an automatic transmission was available for certain Otto engines.

In model year 2000 an extensive Facelift took place, which contained many technical changes of detail apart from certain optical changes also. The Faceliftmodell is to be recognized among other things by clear glass headlights and a changed center console.

It found also a Mitsubishi engine introduction into the S40/V40: 4 cylinders a direct A SPLASh Otto engine from 1,8 of the l capacity an output of 122 HP got - this engine identically constructed in the Mitsubishi of the Carisma GDI was used, received the type designation 1,8i and used according to manufacturer data to approximately 1 l less Sprit on 100 km than likewise offered 1.8 the l Otto engine of Volvo. In model year 2002 the following motorizing in Germany were offered:

  • 1.6 l capacity Otto engine with 80 KW/109 HP starting from 19.700, - EUR
  • 1.8 l capacity Otto engine with 90 KW/122 HP starting from 20.700, - EUR (type name 1,8)
  • 1.8 l capacity Otto engine with 90 KW/122 HP (engine manufacturers: Mitsubishi) starting from 23.950, - EUR (only as Comfort or sport available, type name 1,8i)
  • 2.0 l capacity Otto engine with 100 KW/136 HP starting from 22.100, - EUR
  • 2.0 l capacity turbo Otto engine with 120 KW/163 HP starting from 23.600, - EUR
  • 2.0 l capacity turbo Otto engine with 147 KW/200 HP starting from 28.070, - EUR (only as sport available, type name T4)
  • 1.9 l capacity turbo Diesel engine with 75 KW/102 HP (engine manufacturers: Renault) starting from 21.100, - EUR
  • 1.9 l capacity turbo Diesel engine with 85 KW/115 HP (engine manufacturers: Renault) starting from 22.100, - EUR

All quotations refer to the sedan S40 in model year 2002.Das combination model V40 cost in each case to 1000, - EUR more.

In the S40/V40 excluding 4 cylinders engines were offered. The petrol engines are starting from 2.0 litres capacity and/or the turbo engines around a cylinder shortened engines of the Volvo 850 (late S/V 70). These engines are combined also with transmissions and braking and/or chassis components of the 850er-Serie. An automatic transmission was only for Otto engines without the 1.6 l and 1,8i engine against a surcharge of 1.600. - EUR available.

Equipment lines

With the standardization of the equipment lines within the Volvo Car Group also for the V40 three different equipment pacts were offered:

  • Basis (without special designation)
  • Comfort, surcharge 1550, - EUR in model year 2002 (additionally: On board computer, chrome applications outside, interior applications in dark grey, light alloy wheels, fog headlights and textile floor mats, RDS radio with cartridge player)
  • Sport, surcharge 1800, - EUR in model year 2002 (additionally: On board computer, darkly supported clear glass headlight, interior applications in pianoschwarz, for front and roof spoilers, light alloy wheels, fog headlights and textile floor mats, RDS radio with cartridge player)

The basis equipment shows itself starting from the Facelift from the outside by the not-painted door handles and the yellow clearance lights; the Comfort equipment possesses chrome of door handles as well as yellow clearance lights and the sport equipment has painted door handle hollows and white clearance lights.

Last model year was driven out as "Classic edition" and possessed a revalued basic equipment zzgl. the equipment lines.

Market situation

In Germany above all the V40 combination models resemblance found. The buyers estimated the obliging/pleasing form and high functionality with simultaneous durchdachter and Bedienung.Auch the always rear places into the annual General German Automobile Association breakdown statistics could in it nothing change. Due to their low belly of approx. 6.1 l to 100 km the Diesels motorizing blocked starting from 2000 were very in demand; both engines fulfill the pollutant class euro 3.
