Volcher Coiter (* 1534 in Groningen, "† 1576 in France), also Volcher Coyter and/or Koyter, was a Netherlands physician and ornithologist.

Its guardian was an Italian physician and natural scientist Ulisse Aldrovandi, over which life Coiters is only little well-known. It is possible that Coiter, which itself particularly with anatomy and physiology busy studied Leonhart fox in with the German physician.

From 1562 on he taught surgery and logic in Bologna, where he had visited Aldrovandis instruction before, until he was stopped 1566 of the Inquisition and arrested for one year, because he had followed the reformation. Between 1566 and 1569 he served the Mark count Ludwig VI. in Amberg, afterwards he dressed a place until 1576 as a physician in Nuremberg, which had been probably provided for him by the German physician and Botaniker Rudolf Jakob Camerarius. 1575 he is recruited by the Mark count during a campaign against France as an army surgeon, while who he dies.

Coiter, which was first, that the Embryologie as independent, adequate medical discipline treated, due to its observations at chicken embryos famous had become, their development it up to slipping day after day described. It described besides the female genital organs in Externarum et Internarum Principalium Humani Corporis of 1573. Besides he employed the observation that freshly taken Herzgewebsportionen further-strikes for a while, and that the fabric low-lain in the heart further-strikes longest, whereby it was with large probability first, which this phenomenon described.

It studied in addition intensively the anatomy and the behavior of the birds and published designs of the skeletons of the Kraniche, the Kormorane, the parrots and the green woodpeckers.
