With the spreading of computer steered working processes in profit and Non profit organizations and with the introduction of the Internets in production and administrative procedures the term virtual working group emerges for the 1990er years increased.

A basis for the term clarifying applies the contribution of Sonja Utz in Boos (2000), which describes virtual working groups as teams, whose members consist of different and spatially separated enterprises and organizations. The characteristic element of virtual working groups is predominant those medial mediated communication. In the beginnings of virtual co-operation they are particularly in the research and Entwicklungsbereich.

Rainer miner and Clemens Niederholtmeyer (Darmstadt 2003) extended the term to each working group within one or several organizations not only in the profit but also within the Non profit range. Everywhere, where coworkers communicate predominantly over data lines, one can speak of virtual working groups or of virtual teams.

Advantages of virtual work forms:

- Information can be sent in seconds by a place of the earth to the other one.

- Discussions and conferences can be called up at short notice in the form of Chat, telephone or video conferences.

- Documents can be stored, worked on central in a data base and used at the same time by all.
