The Versandhandel is a kind of the retail trade (distance trade), with which the products are offered by catalog, folder, Internet, television or representative. The order of the desired products can verbally (e.g. by telephone or representative), in writing (e.g. by letter or fax) or also on-line to be transacted. The following payment can take place by credit card, cash on delivery, or also on calculation. The soil quality of the customer can inquire the mail-order house first at certain inquiry agencies (e.g. Schufa at private customers or Creditreform with commercial customers)

Distinction after target group

One differentiates in principle two kinds with respect to the Versandhandel:

• B2C (or BtC), Business ton of Consumer: directly addressed to the private final consumer (consumer).
• B2B (or BtB), Business ton of Businesses: addressed to commercial final consumers (enterprise, authorities etc.).

Distinction after assortment

It distinctive between:

• Special sender: Dispatch trading ventures, on an assortment range specialize (textiles/mode, HiFi, furniture ect.). Examples Conrad electronics, Heine, whale shrubs and Calevo riding)
• Universal sender: Dispatch trading venture, usually with one or more appearing seasonal main catalogues, supported by several special catalogs, a "purchase or department store" - an assortment (clothing, entertainment electronics, furniture, housewares,"Â…) offer (e.g. Baur dispatch, petrol dispatch, source dispatch, Neckermann.de).

After an order and whereupon following an agreement on a paying procedure the products are dispatched by delivery services or Logistikdienstleister to the users. Private customer logistics differs from commercial logistics by the challenges of the so-called last mile to the customer.

With the Versandhandel there is a revocation right (see revocation) for the protection of the consumer regulated by the sales contract, which is exercised frequently by a return right, among other things in the remote paragraph guideline the European Union.

Partial prohibition of the Versandhandels

For youth-endangering products a fundamental prohibition of the Versandhandels exists, "§ 15 exp. 1 No. 3 JuSchG. "§ 1 exp. 4 JuSchG defines here the term of the Versandhandels, afterwards however no forbidden Versandhandel is present, if by suitable precautions it is prevented that the ordered commodity comes into the hands of children and young people.
