Koose Muniswamy Veerappan (* 18 January 1952 in the village Gopinatham in Karnataka; "† 18 October 2004 in Tamil Nadu) was a boss of a gang, which was made responsible by the Indian authorities for kidnappings, the murder of 120 humans (under it 44 policemen), the killing of over 2.000 elephants and the smuggling of ivory and Sandelholz.

By its cunning procedure and skillful chess moves he could provide however despite his bloody business a large popularity and develop the image of a "Robin Hood", with proceeds from its criminal actions in-stood for the poor people of the region (see also tribal people). It is questionable whether it made alone the support from the population for it possible to escape decades long the government authority. It is accepted that it controlled a set of high-ranking politicians, government employees and policemen in all three surrounding states by corruption. The forests in the hilly border area of the southIndian Federal States Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu (Nilgiri Hills) are however indeed one of the last with difficulty accessible regions of India.

Its largest coup was the three-month kidnapping of the southIndian filming acre Rajkumar from 30 July to 15 November 2000. At this time it had become already calm around it. Its last well-known murder dated the last confrontation with the government authority from 1993, from the year 1996. The kidnapping brought it the title pages of the Indian newspapers. For weeks he could hide himself with his hostage before the search troops of the Indian police, which used even helicopters. To its demands, which had a mostly political character, to a large extent only by means of promises one allowed.

Obviously in reaction to the not fulfilled promises kidnapped Veerappan on 25 August 2002 the politician Hannur Nagappa. After an again three-month kidnapping Nagappa was dead found on 8 December 2002. The demands Veerappans - it had demanded, should allegedly an amnesty for itself it place itself - had not been fulfilled.

Since then it had become calm around it. Allegedly with the attempt to escape its arrest it was killed on 18 October 2004 in a shooting with the police. With the shooting, which took place between 22.15 and 22.45 o'clock local time, also three of its gang members died.

Parts of the population believe that Veerappan became too old, in order to follow all his obligations opposite its gang and the lubricated politicians. By its death with the "failed arrest" an avalanche was prevented by corruption determinations against high-ranking politicians, who would have been very probably released with successful arrest.
