Ursula Gertrud of the Leyen geb. Albrecht (* 8 October 1958 in Brussels) is a German politician (CDU). She is since 2005 a federal minister for family, seniors, women and youth and was from 2003 to 2005 minister for social, women, family and health of the country Lower Saxony.

Training and occupation

After the Abitur 1976 in studied Ursula of the Leyen from 1977 to 1980 political economy taught at the Universities of Goettingen and A following medicine study at the medical university Hanover (MHH) locked it 1987 with the state examination and their license to practise medicine as a lady doctor. Family

Ursula of the Leyen is married since 1986 with medicine professor Heiko of the Leyen and has seven children. She is the daughter of the former Prime Minister of Lower Saxony Ernst Albrecht (CDU) and its Mrs ennobling (gest. 2002).

A party

Ursula of the Leyen is since 1990 member of the CDU. From 1996 to 1997 it was member in the national specialized committee social politics of the CDU Lower Saxony, afterwards also member in the working group of physicians of the CDU Lower Saxony.

With the CDU Federal Party Congress in Duesseldorf in December 2004 she was selected after the surprising defeat by Hermann Josef Arentz in the first ballot in the presidency of the CDU. Since February 2005 it leads also the CDU commission "parents, child, occupation".

On 17 August 2005 it was appointed by Angela Merkel into the authority team for the election to the Bundestag 2005 the CDU/CSU for the ranges family and health.

Delegate

From 2001 to 2004 Ursula of the Leyen the advice of the city Sehnde belonged and was here also a chairman to the CDU parliamentary group. Besides it was at this time also member of the region meeting Hanover and there chairman of the committee health and hospitals.

From 2003 to 2005 it was member of the federal state parliament of Lower Saxony.

Public offices

To 4. March 2003 was appointed it as a minister for social, women, family and health into the federal state government led of Prime Minister Christian Wulff of Lower Saxony.

On 22 November 2005 Ursula was appointed of the Leyen as a federal minister for family, seniors, women and youth into the Federal Government led of Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel.
