An upper physician is a physician in leading function, usually in a hospital or in a medical supplying center. Due to his advanced or already final further training (specialist) he takes responsibility for a described scope of responsibility within his institution. An upper physician is comparable to a department manager. Particularly at university clinics the Habilitation is often a condition for the activity as an upper physician.

An upper physician carries responsibility for one or more stations or functional units of his institution (function upper physician, for example function upper physician of the Endoskopie).
