The United nation Conference on trade and development (UNCTAD, German: Conference of the United Nations for trade and development, briefly world trade and conference of development) has its seat in Geneva and is a constant organ of the general assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Their goal is the promotion of the trade between countries with a different level of development (main industrialized countries and developing countries). In addition the communication between south and north (geographically seen south and Northern Hemisphere) is to be improved by the UNCTAD and a new international economic system to be compiled. To the staff of the UNCTAD 400 coworkers, the chairman belong are at present (March 2006) Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi (Thailand).

To the UNCTAD today 192 industrie, and belong above all developing countries, whose representative together-finds itself every four years to a conference. Activities of the UNCTAD are coordinated however by a bi-annually meeting handels and development advice. This advice is arranged into different committees, which itself with the poverty fight, which international goods traffic and co-operation between the developing countries concern. A special committee supervises one "special department ", which it the developing countries made possible to supply a part of its goods exports with smaller customs duty to more highly developed countries (v. A. of industrialized countries).

In addition there are different teams of experts, which are concerned with investment, financial and privatisation questions as well as with the transfer of technology.

History of the UNCTAD

Most (today's) of the developing countries were in former times occupied by mostly European colonial powers. These did not attach great importance to a good education of the population of their colonies. and raw materials were exported in the motherland, where a refinement too more highly developed goods took place - and where the profit remained. Thus the today's arrears are to be explained in relation to the industrialized countries at least partly. After the Dekolonialisierung was taken up by the today's industrialized countries effected and with the time the most former colonies and current independent countries to the United Nations, the developing countries exceeded already soon the number of the industrialized countries in the UN.

An unfair international economic system to complaints of the developing countries, it is disadvantaged in relation to the industrialized countries and it prevails (WWO) came. The representatives of 120 nations built themselves at the beginning up of the sixties, in order to discuss the problems of the international markets and the trade. This discussion took three months and due to the promising results, decided the UN-general assembly to let this become a constant mechanism. The UNCTAD in Geneva developed on 30 December 1964.

  • Fulfilment of the development assistance plans (0.7% BSP for development assistance of the IL)
