By a unit trade union one understands a trade union, which can be for all employees without consideration for their political or world-descriptive conviction unionized homeland. A condition for it is a strict neutrality of this trade union in political-world-descriptive questions and the tolerant consideration of all existing world-descriptive-political currents in management commitees and with internal and/or except-unionized elections.

Critics doubt whether this is possible and refers to the direction trade unions established in nearly all states of Europe. The idea of the unit trade union is one of the demands of the survivors from the concentration camps. Into the resolutions, communist manifestos and explanations of the survivors the KZ beech forest the demand e.g. dips after a unit trade union, which organizes the persons employed cross-party, always (see people front committee beech forest).

After the national socialists had obligatorily dissolved in the year 1933 up to this time the direction trade unions existing in Germany and by the German work front (DAF) had replaced, a discussion began around a new start after the end of the war. Also the theory played a role whether the "Zerissenheit" of the German trade unions had facilitated the seizure of power by the NSDAP and whether one can prevent such for the future with a unit trade union. A further theory was, one must to unanimity against in the employer camp a unit organization set, in order to be able to be successful. The two theory beginnings are not finally clarified yet.

The establishment of the unit trade unions was favoured additionally by the policy of the allied ones, the direction trade unions a readmission refused. In later years it came then due to criticized political unilateral nature of the DGB in favor of the SPD to the reestablishment more differently, above all the "Christian trade unions"

The DGB sees itself "obligated since its establishment 1949"Â… to the principle of the unit trade union: pluralistisch and politically independently, by no means however neutrally." That contradict among other things the Christian trade union metal.
