A transport enterprise is an enterprise, whose purpose is the production from indirect and direct services to the change of location of goods, persons and message carriers - thus traffic services and traffic emergency services -. In addition means of transport (infrastructure, mobile equipment, driving power, worker, organization and enterprise among other things) are to the transport enterprise at the disposal, which are coordinated in such a manner with business and/or economical methods and mechanisms (personnel management, financing, account system and bookkeeping, marketing, paragraph) that the business goals are achieved. Special transport enterprises, whose task is mainly the change of location of persons, goods or messages, are called transporting enterprises.

Transport enterprises can exhibit different property and legals form, whereby public or private owners as well as combinations can occur. Due to the liberalisation and denationalization of the traffic in Europe for the end 20. Century the portion of state-own transport enterprises (also called transporting enterprises) decreased.

Transport enterprises notice quite different tasks at the traffic market. According to common characteristics can several transport enterprises to industries be arranged. (See branch of traffic)

Most transport enterprises offer traffic capacities primarily from own economic interest. However also the state can have an interest in the production of traffic services, although for purely economic reasons an appropriateness for the traffic offer is not given. (see traffic policy, precaution for existence/basic supply). In this case the state transfers the responsibility and/or working group for the contribution of the traffic capacity, while the transport enterprise appears as implementing instance. (See also
