Pointer typewriter (index typewriter)

With this kind of typewriters with a pointer on an index the letter is selected and brought afterwards with its own key or lever to the notice. Construction dependently most pointer machines had a type drum (Crown), a type cylinder (Mignon) or a print wheel (Victor) as type members. By omission these machines could be attractive offer to the type bar mechanics very and particularly in the private sector were used.

A special case is Swiss machine "Saturn". This machine is with type bars equipped (Unteranschlag), the selection of the letter concerned been made by an index.

Type bar typewriter (mechanical)

The type bar typewriter decreases/goes back to one of John T. Underwood after a patent technology further developed by Franz Xaver Wagner. This Schreibmaschinentyp is used until today and exhibits the following substantial characteristics:

Car

With type bar typewriters the platen on a carriage, the so-called car moves. The segment with the type bars in-hung therein is certain. With each fastened letter the car a step moves to the left. This drive is manufactured by a strong clock feather/spring work, which draws itself up, if one pushes the car to the right.

Platen

The platen consists of a steel cylinder with a thick With usual type bar typewriters a DIN-A4 side fits in lengthwise and can be described in its from the left to the right edge. With machines with a so-called long carriage paper fits also in the format A4-Quer (DIN-A3 corresponds lengthwise) inside. This is in the rest of also the condition for a typewriter, in order to be considered as office type writer.

Rubber platens wear with the time. The rubber hard and it to develop, conditionally thereby that with machines with the types break firm writing width open always the same place of the platen, with the time groove-like recesses in the rubber. With suitable solvents (at that time tri chlorine ethyls and Perchlorethylen, after their prohibition also later still different high-poisonous halogenhaltige connections) the platens are cleaned and roughened up with maintenance. In completely bad cases the roller can be sanded off also on a turning lathe around a few tenth of a millimeter. Even if this nothing more uses, the rubber lining must be renewed. Many motor-car tire manufacturers had such a platen service in the program in the bloom time of the typewriter as specialized enterprises for rubber Vulkanisation, so for example the company Continental AG.

Stechwalze

The Stechwalze is a special platen with a so-called Walzenstechknopf at the left side of the left roller grasp. If one presses these in, the Zeilenrastung is switched off, one can adjust the paper steplessly without each resting. This is used particularly when filling out forms not optimized for typewriters. If one releases the Stechknopf, then he snaps back by a feather/spring and locks the platen again in the Zeilenrastung.

Type bar mechanics

Type bar typewriters possess daring suppl. impulses with balance beams by definition, over which the energy of the keystroke fastens a lever with the appropriate type on a paper drawn up on a platen. The type bar possesses usually two types one above the other, one in Klein rift down and over it the appropriate capital.

Change-over

Between large and Klein rift can be switched over the shift key. Depending upon switching condition according to the upper or lower type is fastened. The change-over takes place either by lowering the segment (segment change-over) or by raising of the car (car change-over). For the 10-finger system two shift keys on the keyboard are needed, one left and one right at the key field. The left shift key has a locking, the so-called Feststelltaste. If it is operated, this makes a tapping possible of capital letters, without having to consider the shift key pressed.

Line spacing

The car is pushed back at the beginning of a new line with the line shift lever by hand. Also the paper is carried on by the rest positions which can be stopped before at the car. Usually 1,5 rest positions are, thus one and a half lines. With many machines one can however also up to 2,5 lines step up. With withdrawing the car a Uhrfeder is drawn up, which makes the easy transport of the car during the stepping circuit and with the notice for a type possible.

Left and right edge

For the setting-up of the edge the edge marking can be set over a slidegate valve. The lefthand side serves as notice and start of line for the car retreat, the right edge as marking for the line end. Zirka ten indications before the line end mechanically a bell is released, which signals the approaching end of the line. Over the margin release key the edge barrier can be solved and continued to write up to the absolute edge.

Stepping circuit

With each notice the car is moved on around a step position. The car makes a half step when fastening the key and a further when releasing the key. The incrementation is firmly defined with the type bar typewriter by construction. There are models with 10, 12 and 15 indications per inch (CPI). Some machines have a spaced characters function, with which the machine carries equivalent two steps on during a stepping circuit.

Tabulator

Some type bar typewriters possess a tabulator mechanism. Over different keys a so-called tabulator stop can be set or reset again at any position of a line. For this a small slidegate valve at the car back high or again is down-pushed. For each step position there is its own slidegate valve. Over a separate key all set tabulator stops can be deleted at the same time, put back thus. Now if the tab key is pressed, the stepping circuit is disengaged and the car drives up to the next set tabulator position. If no Tab stop is set, the car to at right edge drives.

Decimal tabulator

The decimal tabulator is an advancement of the tabulator. Hereby it is made possible to write decimal numbers buchhalterisch correctly among themselves thus with the comma in the same column among themselves. The typewriter orders in addition beyond the tab key over special decimal tabulator keys so mentioned for 10er, 100er, 1.000er, 10.000er, and 100.000er-Stellen. If one wants to write for example the number 12,345, 67 under the number 678.90, then one sets the Tab stop on the position of the comma and starts the position for the first number with the 100er-Tabulator. The car comes now exactly to the 100er-Stelle before the comma to a halt. One starts the second line then therefore with the 10.000er-Tabulator, with which the car remains standing on the position of the 10.000er-Stelle.

Ribbon feed, - stroke and - change-over

So that a letter is to be seen at all on the paper, the type is fastened over the ribbon, a volume from Naturseide or nylon, soaked with ink. So that the straight writing is to be also read, the ribbon is only raised when fastening the type over the Farbbandgabel. The ribbon is on two coils and by a side on the other one is constantly rolled up. If the one side at the end is, the ribbon drive recognizes this by the tension of the volume and switches the winding direction accordingly over a lever. More modern machines can use already two-colored soaked volumes. In addition the ribbon is divided into two colors, mostly down red and black above in the center. There are however also all other only erdenklichen color combinations as for example green/red or also only in-colored purely black or blue ribbons. Over a lever the user can adjust the stroke of the Farbbandgabel in such a way that this is not raised at all either up to the black range, to the red range or. In latter case one writes then completely without use of a ribbon, approximately for the repair of errors by means of correction paper.

Paper introduction lever

Some machines have at the car a special lever, over which a sheet paper can be drawn completely simply and fast into the machine.

Paper release lever

The paper release lever loosens the pressure feathers/springs, which the paper tub with its feed rolls presses against the platen. This serves careful taking of a finished described sheet paper out. Often in features it is represented that the author of a typed document pulls simply on the paper and from the machine removes so the sheet with a ratschenden noise. This ratschende noise is caused by the Zeilenrastung. This kind of the paper distance "thanks" each typewriter the user in the long run with a line spacing defective by wear.
