Transport Corridor Europe Caucasus Asia (TRACECA) is a traffic and a communication project, which are to connect Europe and Central Asia. It is to revive the westeastern ways of the historical large silk road.

History

This concerns one 1993 presented project of the European union in the context of their TACIS program. Until 2002 became from the trace approx. budget 46 single projects for altogether 99.6 million US Dollar financed, of it 33 research projects and 13 investment project to the reconstruction of an infrastructure. Approximately 50% of the budget are intended for investments, which are to make the TRASECA program more attractive and create a favorable investment climate

To 7. and 8 September 1998 a conference took place over the "re-establishment of the historical large silk road" in Baku. To the conclusion Bulgaria, Georgien, Kasachstan, Kirgisistan, Moldavia, Romania, Tadschikistan, Turkey, the Ukraine and Usbekistan a "Mulilaterale agreement over international transport and the development of an European-Caucasian-asiatic passage" signed Armenia, Azerbaijan.

To a conference in March 2000 in Tiflis an intergovernmental committee of the trace approx. states (TRACECA/IGC) took up its work. It opened a constant secretariat in Baku in February 2001 with the help of the European Union. The secretariat is divided into four working groups: Trade, motor vehicles, railway and transportation by sea.

Present

Since 1998 the transportation in the trace approx. passage constantly rose. The route took a special upswing by humanitarian auxiliary goods transportation from Europe to Afghanistan. Azerbaijan registered 3.4 million tons of transit freight in that year. 1999 grew the number on 4.4 million tons, 2000 on 5.7 million tons, 2001 on 7.7 million tons and 2002 on 8.5 million tons.

The upswing led to the establishment of new companies in the countries involved. In Georgien the entrepreneurial group Silk Road Companies Georgia developed (SRG) (dt. silk road companies Georgiens). Together with the kasachischen bank Turan Alem (BTA) created it in March 2005 the Silk Road bank (SRB) (dt. silk road bank), a co-operation with the French enterprise BNP Paribas was received and takes part in the change of the earlier interhotel Iveria to a five-star hotel in the center of Tiflis.

Russian competition

Russia regards the trace approx. project distrustfully, because the way leads around around its territory. In the context of the community of independent States of (GUS) and the UN Russia advances therefore since 1998 alternatives to TRASECA. Four historical road connections between Europe and Asia are to be removed over Russian territory.

When a Scandinavian Russian route becomes particularly promising over sank Petersburg and Moscow regards after Baku in Azerbaijan, which could be resumed into Iran. On the north south route freight could be able to be transported annually up to 100 million tons.
