Transatlantically originally Europe (and Africa) means to north and South America beyond the Atlantiks convenient, or overseas in the sense of the relationship.
By the political development for approximately 1850 the term in the linguistic usage consolidated itself to the relations between Europe and North America (special to the USA), while at the same time the in central and South America loosened the connections of the earlier colonies to the Spanish motherland rather. Only in the last years here - promoted by king Juan Carlo - a trend moving in opposite directions is to be determined.
In the majority of the terms, which contain the word transatlantically, therefore a special connection (or also a looked for distance) between the USA and Europe is meant. Examples of this meaning are among other things:

- Transatlantic tunnel as the Atlantic of underrunning railway tunnels
- Transatlantic flights (also "Atlantic flight") - steadily increasingly since the pioneer flight of Lindbergh 1927
- the continental counterpart of a transatlantic connection is (even longer) the Trans-Siberian railway
