Trade associations are unions of enterprises, which serve the protection of interests of the members. It usually concerns thereby in Germany registered associations, which employ together about 120,000 persons.

The membership in trade associations is voluntary, contrary to the IHK. The federations are arranged according to industries and in central associations, as the Federal association of the German industry and the federation of the German retail trade in summary.

Within the handicraft range the guilds correspond to the restaurant professional associations.
