Tobacconist's shops (or briefly Trafiken, sing. Trafik) are in Austria sales offices for tobacco goods as well as usually also newspapers, magazines, stationery, tickets and other small goods - general in Vienna for example the park lights, as postcards, picture postcards. Only few Trafiken sell still stamps, after the post office reduced the commissions clearly. Also in former times usual stamps were partly sold in Trafiken. There are similar mechanisms in the other succession states of Austria Hungary (e.g. in Tschechien).

The name Trafik comes from the Italian word traffico = trade. One calls the operator of a Trafik Trafikanten. One finds the term in a letter of emperor Joseph II, in whom he recommended already at that time, these places at disabled ex-service men or soldier widows to already assign.

Trafikanten need their own permission of the Austrian monopoly administration, a national society. Permission is predominantly assigned on the basis of social criteria. In addition a need for a certain location is examined. Particularly after the Second World War became, as prefers already in former times, disabled ex-service men with the assignment, in order to make for them possible a lighter entrance.

Only Trafiken may sell tobacco goods at a regular price. If sufficient Trafiken is missing in an area, then also normal business gets sales permission. Catering trade enterprises receive the tobacco goods to the resale also only to the Trafikpreis. Therefore these goods are more expensive in restaurants around 10 - 20 per cent than in the Trafiken.

Since the conversion within the tobacco range constantly decreases/goes back, Trafiken operate usually still additionally Lotto and Totoannahmestellen, for which a permission of the monopoly administration is necessary likewise.
