Maunoir (* 1. June 1806 in Geneva; "† 26 April 1869 in Geneva) was a Swiss surgeon. In the year 1863 it belonged to the five founders of the international committee of the red cross. It died however already six years after establishment of the committee, so that its cooperation did not have substantial effects on the further development of the IKRK. Within the committee and in that Geneva society was he a close friend and promoter of Louis Appia, like Maunoir by occupation surgeon.
Maunoir buildup in the security of a wealthy physician family in Geneva. The family tradition following it studied medicine in England and France and attained 1833 in of Paris the doctor degrees of the surgery. After the return to its hometown it became member that there Geneva commission for hygiene and health. The moreover one supported it than member those Geneva non-profit society. It was considered as extremely intelligent and charming humans with a pleasant sense to humor.
When he married his first Mrs. Esther Etienne Herminie geb. Clavier, he accepted children from an earlier marriage of his wife beside the later common two sons also to the family. After the early death of its first wife in the year 1842 he married again on 26 December 1845. Also with his second Mrs. Anne Christian IANA Farmar geb. Jarvis had it still two further sons and a daughter. Its family life, in particular the support and education of its children, took therefore apart from the activity as a physician and as an advisor for other physicians an important part in his life.
After the publication of the book "a memory of Solferino" in the year 1862 by Henry Dunant, in which this its with the battle of Solferino described experiences, Maunoir as well as Henry Dunant, Dr. Gustave Moynier, Guillaume Henri Dufour and Dr. Louis Appia formed in February 1863 a committee of the five as a committee for that Geneva non-profit society. Short time later this committee renamed into international committee of the auxiliary companies for the wounding care, and 1876 came out from it the international committee of the red cross (IKRK). In the meetings of the committee Maunoir stressed in particular importance to contact with the ideas Dunants not only leading personalities in politics and military to carry and make thus to a mass movement but the idea of the red cross also into the public.
Of 26. by 29 October 1863 an international conference took place on initiative of the committee in Geneva, to which over the concrete conversion by Dunants suggestions one advised. When it came during this conference to differences between the delegated one regarding the inclusion of Freiwilligen into the wounding care, it succeeded to Maunoir with a convincing speech to turn a threatening failure away of the meeting.
In particular with Louis Appia, likewise, he was in a friendly manner closely connected for surgeon by occupation. For the twelve years younger Appia, which only 1849 had come in the age from 31 years to Geneva, Maunoir was thereby its Mentor society Geneva within that. It remained up to its early and unexpected death in the year 1869 member of the IKRK. As its successor within the committee that was selected Geneva restaurant politician Louis Micheli de la Rive. In Geneva the Rue Maunoir was designated to the memory of Maunoir.
