Thomas Mancuso (* 19 February 1912 in New York; "† 4. July 2004 in Oakland (California)) was an US-American physician
Already as a boy it decided to become physician. In addition it had probably insignificantly not contributed that his older brother at heart failure on the football field died. 1937 he attained the graduation to the Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.
Until 1962 it led the department of industrial hygiene of public health authorities of Ohio. Afterwards it remained up to its 70. Lebensjahr professor at the University of Pittsburgh. It created important bases of the modern industrial medicine. The Methodiker led difficult long-term studies over the effect injurious to health of materials such as asbestos, chrome and beryllium.
1965 it was assigned by the national Atomic Energy Commision AEC to examine the consequences of weakly ionizing radiation for approximately 500,000 workers who were active in US atom bomb factories. Its studies were not terminated yet, when 1974 the report of a colleague was published over cases of cancer with workers of the plutonium factory Hanford.
Manusco should sign on it a playing down explanation. It refused carrying the signature out. "There is here a basic principle, which concerns, said all scientists" it. Shortly thereafter the energy Ministry painted the means to it and seized all data of its investigations. It continued to research with colleagues nevertheless. Only years later were recognized the test results.
In the year 2000 congress of US adopted a remuneration program for former workers in atomic factories, which almost disbursed a billion US Dollar until 2004. Also its investigations on the cancer producing effect by beryllium were attacked many years. Until today, so David Michaels of the George Washington University School OF Public Health, are its studies "prick in the meat of the Verschmutzer".
Still as a pensioner Mancuso advised the international machinist combination. Its last investigation on the effects of chrome appeared 1997.
