Sir Thomas Lipton (* 10. May 1850 in Glasgow; "† 2 October 1931 in London) was a British Selfmademan, dealer and a yacht owner, which created the famous Lipton dte mark and which was most persistent challengers in the history of the America's Cup.

1865 went to Lipton into the USA and accepted there most diverse jobs. It returned five years later to Great Britain and opened its first grocer's shop. This enterprise turned out as very successful and Lipton opened soon a chain of grocer's shops. In order to supply its business with goods, Lipton Plantagen bought and created thus among other things the Lipton dte mark, which still exists today.

1898 it created the company Lipton. In the same year it was struck to the knight. 1902 it became Baronet.

King Eduard VII. and king George V. divided both their interest in the yacht haven with Lipton and enjoyed its society. Between 1899 and 1930 he provoked the American cup owners of the America's Cup in the name of the Royal Ulster yacht club (Lipton was Irish descent) five times with its yachts Shamrock - Shamrock V. These efforts, which brought in a particularly created cup for the "best all loser" for him, increased the Bekanntheitsgrad of its dte mark in the USA. As Selfmademan Lipton was however no born member of the British Oberschicht and the Royal yacht Squadron accepted it only briefly before its death as a member.

Still before the first soccer world championship in the year 1930, Thomas Lipton donated the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, which was out-played in two international tournaments in Turin 1909 and 1911.

The mark Lipton belongs today to Unilever.
