The Onion (English onion = bulb) is a satire magazine in English language, which appears weekly in the Internet and in different US-American cities also in the pressure.
The Onion is arranged as Parodie on a daily paper. Their US-American "model "is above all the newspaper the USA Today usually-sold there. The articles of The Onion commentate material like fictitious events from world and US-American home policy, the television, the world the Hollywood star and an abundance of the other social topics. The authors of The Onion maintain thereby no individual style, but a common editorship style, which changes only little.
The sow-Irish articles imitate thereby the dry, material style of an agency message or the intonation of a editorial. The joke of the articles is always already contained in the headline. Thus for instance "the headlines of the yearly 2005 read ", which published The Onion in the expenditure from 29 December 2005: "Bush Elected President OF Iraq "("Bush to the president Iraq selected "), "Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Kashmir Earthquake Battle For Natural Disasty Award "("Tsunami in Asia, hurricane Katrina, earthquake in Kashmir compete at the price for natural catastrophes "), "Pope Died As He Lived: Propped UP For Public Viewing "("the Pope died, as he lived: Aufgebahrt before public ") or "White House Celebrates Fifth Straight Year Without orally Sex "("the white house celebrates: Already five years without Oralsex "). Some articles work with the old principle of the wrong world, approximately at the message: "World's Knowledge ton Written down "("the entire knowledge of the world is to be noted in books ").
Many messages concern themselves also with local news or with sarkastischen observations of everyday situations, which can in everyone lives occur ("to AREA of loose tons donate remainder of OF Day in Bed "- "failure spends the remainder of the daily in bed ") or "Everybody Browsing RK video net curtain Saying Stupid Things "- "all other customers in the Videothek talk stupid things ")). The heroes of many of such stories are called "AREA one "or "AREA Woman "- expressions, which became with Onion readers the standing term. The joke insists then frequently in the transmission of subjective observations on the objective style and the sober reporting of a newspaper.
Besides there is a statistics to an absurd topic, a Horoskop, which predict usually a greyful, but original death to everyone, and the current inquiry in each expenditure ("What DO You "and/or "American Voices ") to material today's political topics - whereby the answers are fictitious the names and occupations, but the Portraitfotos of the asked ones is never replaced. In the column "The Onion in History "appears in each case "the title page "by The Onion from one year 20. Century, on that the highlights of this yearly, the life-style and the trends of the time to be sow-Irish taken up. The Zeitungsseiten appeared collected in the book Our Dumb Century ("our century ").
The sow-Irish editorials, which come not from renowned journalists, but from (fictitious) Underdogs or bizarren personalities, are not contained in each expenditure among them the fictitious publisher T. Herman Zweibel, which is according to own data since 1901 in the office. Others "columnists ", which arise occasionally, are Larry Groznic, a over-weighty Comic and Computerspielfreak, Herbert Kornfeld, a conventional accountant, which speak however in a grotesque Gangsta RAP Idiom, or Jackie Harvey, a Hollywood reporter, whose messages from the world the star are neither current nor original. In the councellor column "Ask A"Â… "are answered reader forwardings by conceivablly unsuitable councellors, about to an elite soldier or a honey bee, whom ignore the question completely.
The satire newspaper is supplemented by the serious supplement (and/or Website) The Onion A.V. club, in which current CDs, books, DVDs, motion picture films and computer games are discussed critically. There are also interviews with actors and musicians, Cartoons and the Sex column Savage Love of Dan Savage.
The Onion was created 1988 in Madison (Wisconsin) by Tim saucy and Christopher Johnson, two students of the University OF Wisconsin. Later they sold one year the sheet, which was hardly more than one joke collection, for 19,000 dollar to the draughtsman and author Scott Dikkers and the Peter Haise. First The Onion found only local spreading, however with ever larger economic success. 1995 wanted to then dare the publishers the jump into the larger public: with an appearing regular Parodie on the appearing country-wide daily paper the USA Today. Considerably the author Robert seal and the Layouter Andrew Welyczko developed the new style. The break-through came however only, when the Website theonion.com was furnished to 1996. Since then the side developed to one the most well-known, usually-quoted and usually-visited sow-Irish Websites of English language. Side calls per month rose from approximately 777,000 in the year 1998 to 8.596.000 in the year 2004.
In January 2001 the editorship of Madison (Wisconsin) moved to New York. The new backer, the investor David Schafer, provided for a further economic growth of the sheet and for the establishment of The Onion than well-known brand name.
In the year 2001 was The Onion the sow-Irish medium, which reacted also at the earliest one to the terrorist attacks on 11 September. The expenditure to the topic "Holy Fucking Shit - Attack on America "("shit - America condemned is attacked ") had chances for the Pulitzer price to be nominated as the Juror serrate Stalberg said later. The sow-Irish articles of the first expenditure after the notices carried headlines like "U.S. Vows ton of Defeat Whoever It Is We're RK were With "("the USA praised: Whoever fights there against us, we will strike her "), "American Life turn Into bath Jerry Bruckheimer Movie "("the life in America transforms into a bad film of Jerry Bruckheimer ") and "to Hijackers Surprised ton find Selves in bright "("hi-jackers are to their surprise in hell again "). Politically The Onion shows up rather left-liberally and government-critically, whereby many contributions straight were considered to the Iraq war on it, the soldiers understanding to treat and only the ruling powers George W. Bush, Dick Cheney etc. to attack.
Articles from The Onion were misunderstood despite - or straight because of - their appropriate sow-Irish representation of the reality occasionally of other media than material messages. Thus the Chinese newspaper Beijing Evening news translated a part of an article from The Onion, according to which congress of US threatened, in the year 2002 Washington (D.C.) to leave, if a new, larger and more comfortable Kapitol becomes not immediately built. The article of The Onion alluded to similar demands of American football crews, which required at this time for larger and better stages.
In March 2004 the television station MSNBC presented an article of The Onion as material message. The article quoted an invented scientific study, according to which 58% of the Fitnesstrainings, which is exercised in America, in Telegymnastik transmissions take place (Study: 58 Percent OF U.S. Exercise Televised, The Onion 40-10, 2004).
The printout of The Onion is available as subscription and in some larger US-American cities also in the free sales. In May 2005 this Madison (Wisconsin) was, Milwaukee, New York town center, Chicago, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Denver, Boulder (Colorado) and San Francisco. According to data of The Onion reaches the printout of approximately 990,000 readers.
