The act was a German monthly magazine for politics and culture. It was created in April 1909 and appeared until 1938 in the publishing house of Eugen Diederichs in Jena. 1939 to 1944 became it under the title the XX. Century continued. The magazine was subjected in the individual phases of their existence different world-descriptive currents.

Freereligiously (1909-1912)

The magazine was created in April 1909 by the freereligious and prominent Freimaurer Ernst Horneffer and appeared first with the sub-title ways to free Menschentum.

Lebensreformerisch (1912-1918)

In October 1912 Eugen Diederichs transferred the sheet, whose edition amounted to at this time 1000 only involving a loss copy. It was contentwise again aligned, which came in the new sub-title a socialreligious monthly review to the expression. This sub-title was extended a little later and read socialreligious monthly review for German culture. In April 1916 Diederichs made a new change. Education-civil (1918-1929)

After the First World War "a Programmlosigkeit" raised to the program, marks the sheet, it set however nevertheless special accents with the topics "education", "religion" and "people". 1928 handed the editorship to Diederichs over at the Germanists Adam Kuckhoff, which headed for however a course "against the Romantizismus", which did not correspond to Diederichs conceptions. Co-operation lasted therefore not for a long time. However its at the beginning the outside organization in again-material style was modernized, and also the sub-title changed again, this time in monthly review for the organization of new reality.

Young-conservatively (1929-1933)

In September 1929 Hans Zehrer transferred the line of the sheet and made it together with Ernst Wilhelm Eschmann, Ferdiand Fried, Giselher Wirsing the influential organ of the young-recent act circle. With an edition of scarcely 30,000 copies it reached about doubly as many readers in this time like the radical-democratic weekly newspaper the world stage.

"The magazine "the act"", judged Siegfried Kracauer 1931, "has today straight under the intellectual ones of the central layers a strong appendix. He explains himself not only from it that the act circle occurs consciously for the practical and ideological interests of these layers, but also from its combat technique. It is by a format, its German intelligence was cured."

The goals of the act circle are in this time their own conglomerate from "link" and "right" positions: Capitalism criticism connects itself with the call after national autarcy and the demand after a new elite. The large Zuspruch, which this magazine experienced, caused the publisher Gottfried Bermann Fischer as counter measure to adjust in his publishing house Peter Suhrkamp. That should the magazine new one appearing in the S. Fischer publishing house round-looks on a more strongly world-descriptive arranged course to bring and so to the act Paroli offer. After the seizure of power (1933-1939)

After the "seizure of power" of the national socialists Hans Zehrer was set off in October 1933 as a publisher. The adjustment course meanwhile the SS joined Giselher Wirsing let the sheet down-sink to the Bedeutungslosigkeit. In the year 1939 it received the new title "the XX. Century", was stopped however under the conditions of the war 1944 finally.
