Technology management understood

Technology management is a term composition from technology and management. Meant are thereby generally planning, control and control - thus the Managen - of technological activities e.g. in an enterprise.

Tasks of the technology management are (under others):

Classification of technologies

In the engineer sciences in principle distinctive with respect to product and process technologies. A product technology realized in a product a product function and is the technical solution for the desired product function. For example the product function of an engine is producing a rotatorischen movement. Possible product technologies, in order to realize this function, are for example the petrol engine, the diesel engine, or the electric motor.

A process technology fulfills against it a process function. If a process is to shorten for example a steel-pipe, then the circular saw or the water jet cutting is possible process technologies, which fulfill this function.

Development of the technology management

Technology management is a term, which was only coined/shaped into the 1990er years more strongly. Very different term understandings are present.

Came out the term from the research and development management (FuE management) that plans, steers and controls the research and development activities.

The enterprises develop technologies however no longer only and for the own need, but avail themselves purposefully at the external market for technologies, by buying for example patents and licenses of other enterprises. At the same time results possibly come out from the research and development, which are to be used for own enterprise not meaningfully. In this case the enterprise licenses assigns on these technologies and/or sells associated patents and becomes in such a way the offerer on the technology market. In this understanding is technology management the extension of the FuE management around the external technology acquisition and the external technology utilization.
