By the task analysis one understands the mental breakdown of a total task into analytic subtasks. These subtasks are again joined in the course of the task synthesis as preliminary stage of the organizational structure. This analysis synthesis concept was described by Erich Kosiol in its work "organization of the enterprise ".

The task synthesis develops on the task analysis and seizes the determined tasks according to certain criteria together (see place formation), thus it the subjects of function (persons) for fulfilment to be transferred can. The work analysis and process synthesis represents the transition from the structure to the sequence organisation, which to the task analysis and - synthesis attaches.

With the task analysis the total task is divided on the basis arrangement characteristics gradually into the individual components. The so-called tasks of elementary form lower bound of the arrangement. Kosiol arranges the total task by the procedure of the induction of subtasks on the basis the following five dimensions:

Arrangement criterionExample
Performingbuy, manufacture, install, store, pack, sell
ObjectFinished products, raw materials, intermediate products
Phaseplan, accomplish, control; Purchase planning, - execution, - control
Rankarrange/implement
Purpose relationshipTasks of purpose/supporting tasks (like e.g. administration)
  • Performing: Arrangement after activities or kinds of work e.g. Purchase, production, sales or - more differentiated - after processes as, orders, supervises etc. inquires.
  • Object: Arrangement according to an article or a person (engruppe), dem/r the demanded activity to on carry out itself is. Objects can be: Raw materials, products, persons, markets etc.
  • Phase: Arrangement into the three phases planning, implementing and control.
  • Rank: Arrangement in remark and tasks of decision. Task of decision is for example the placing of order, execution the job execution.
  • Purpose relationship: Arrangement after core and support processes (tasks of purpose, e.g. manufacturing, selling or administrative tasks such as bookkeeping).

Regarding the refinement degree of these activities there are no binding standards. Main arrangement characteristics of the task analysis are "performing "and "object ". For closer concretizing the dimensions serve "rank ", "phase "and "purpose relationship ". The depth of the task analysis depends in particular on the following criteria:

  • Structure-organizational setting of tasks
  • Complexity of the tasks
  • Degree of the desired division of labor
  • Material employment
  • Frequency of the task accumulation

The result of the task analysis is the task distribution plan in the documentation form of the tree structure. The task analysis is based on the following premises: Describability and demarcation of the task of enterprise, plan barness of the business activity, abstraction of the task of the concrete person of the place owner, compatibility and consistency of the business real objectives as well as tying the arrangement to process steps.

Criticism at these premises led to new arrangement suggestions for the task analysis, which these supplement, but not to replace is. Among these new arrangement characteristics rank task variability, newness of the task, clarity, task interdependence, controllableness, the strategic meaning of the task as well as complexity of the action goal.
