Taro (Colocasia esculenta) is a useful plant from the family of the (Araceae), which are cultivated since more as 2000 years than Nahrungspflanze. Another name for Taro is water bread root.
Predominantly the tubers of the plant are used. They are cooked like potatoes. In the cultivation countries also the sheets and Blattstiele are eaten as vegetables. They contain much minerals, Vitamin A, B and C.
Taro is cultivated today world-wide in damp, tropical and subtropical climate zones. For the export it is cultivated in Egypt, Costa Rica, the Karibik, Brazil and India.
