The sour clover plants (Oxalidaceae) are a family of the Bedecktsamer (Magnoliophyta).

Oxalic acid was proven for the first time in the sour clover and is contained in all Taxa of the family.

Occurrence

The sour clover plants occur in the whole world except in very cold areas. Their spreading emphasis lies however in the Tropics and Subtropen.

They inhabit a multiplicity of Habitaten of rain forests up to deserts.

Description

In the following the characteristics are described by typical sour clover plants. With individual kinds there can be deviations.

In addition, there is predominantly krautige plants, it gives holzige Taxa: Trees and Lianen.

The sheets of the sour clover plants are usually compound (fumbled, triple or pinnated). With some Taxa sleep and attraction movements are accomplished. The can be folded up downward.

The blooms are located individually or in cymosen bloom conditions into Blattachseln.Die blooms of the sour clover plants are arranged into cup sheet circle and Kronblattkreis. The grew together freely or at the most at the basis somewhat. The 10 are arranged in two dust sheet circles five. With most kinds the of the two circles have different length (Heterostylie, usually Tristylie). The fruits are caps with different opening mechanisms, more rarely are berries. The seeds are of a fleshy epidermis coated, which with-dry tear, turn down and thus the seeds away centrifuges.

In the family of the sour clover plants (Oxalidaceae) there are five kinds with approximately 770 kinds:

• Averrhoa: There is trees, is most well-known:
  • Star fruit, or Karambole mentioned, (Averrhoa carambola)
• Biophytum: With 50 kinds.
• Dapania
• Sour clover (Oxalis): With 700 kinds.
• Sarcotheca

Taxa of the former family Averrhoaceae belong today to the sour clover plants.
