The term Sehbehinderung is used, if the sight without prospect is on improvement under a certain per cent rank. The criteria for it varieren depending upon the used definition (e.g. WHO, dt. social legislation etc.). The maximum form of a Sehbehinderung is the blindness. A Sehbehinderungen can different organic disturbances be the basis.

Classifications after German social legislation

• starting from visual acuity (Visus) of 0,3 and less
• 0,30 - 0.10 = small (is often only noticeable with first day at school!)
• 0,10 - 0.05 = middle
• 0,05 - 0.02 = high-grade

• Blindness: starting from a visual acuity of at the most 0.02 (= 1/50 EH)
• Fullblindly (Amaurosis): vision completely expired, no visual perception, also without light perception

Also a restriction of the visual field on less than 5 degrees is recognized than blindness.

Used terms

With respect to the medical eye medicine the terms Sehfehler and weak sight are differentiated:

As Sehfehler (technical term: Refraction errors) become myopia, Weitsichtigkeit or cornea/callosity curvature (technical term: Astigmatism or Stabsichtigkeit) designates. Sehfehler are optical errors, which result from to be enough or to short building of the eye - in relation to its breaking media (lens, cornea/callosity, glass body). A correction with eyeglasses or contact lens is possible.

A weak sight (technical term: Amblyopie) however cannot be repaired by bare carrying of eyeglasses. Amblyopien result e.g. from "disadvantage" one or both eyes, e.g. by one-sided squinting, unkorrigierte (one-sided, or strong) Sehfehler or by organic causes (lens turbidity etc.). The weak eye must be particularly trained, in order to learn to see well; this happens by means of taking (technical term off: Okklusion) of the better eye; like much the optician and the diplomierte Orthoptistin decide.

Request for the future

The requests, whose realization is a goal of humans with different Sehbehinderungen and their families and friends, can be summarized in the basic ideas:

• Considered planning instead of barrier establishment
• Attention and respect instead of discrimination
• Integrated sharing instead of social-institutional Ausgrenzung
