Further prototypes

Satellite 603

After the conception of the wankel engine 1960, with VVM automotive manufacture the first rotary piston motors had been built already briefly. Starting from 1962 this engine was tested also with Saxonia ring. After IFA of NSU had bought the license rights for the rotary piston motor, one produced the engine KKM 51/KKM 52 - a smaller for the satellite, a larger for the waiting castle.

The KKM 51 possessed an output of 50 HP with a chamber volume of only 500 cm into several satellite 601 was built and over a distance by 50.000 km tested.

At the same time the development of a new small car with thermosetting polymer body ran, satellite 603 in Zwickau. The developers built a car with sharp-edged lines and prototypes VOLKSWAGEN gulf not dissimilarly. In the built prototypes altogether nine different engines were tested; beside the favored wankel engine also the waiting castle engine and different Viertakter.

The completion of the project had been anvisiert for approximately 1967. One year before however stopped the the development and let all prototypes destroy.

One year later failed also the Wankel project, this time however not because of political, but because of technical hurdles.

Satellite 610

After a failed community project of the RGW car 1973 a new project were tackled. The P 610 should take place like the RGW car in co-operation between the automobile work iron oh (AWE) and Saxonia ring - as well as in loose co-operation with "Škoda -. Despite the development of several success promising prototypes was stopped the project 1979 without result.

That first as P 610 and later than P 1100/1300 designated satellite was implemented than with flow tail. Was propelled the vehicle with a four-cylinder four stroke engine, which provided with an output of 45 HP and a capacity of 1100 cm for a maximum speed of 125 km/h.

To 1979 35 million Marks at development costs had resulted. On 6 November 1979 decided the SED the development of the P 610, which should go to 1984 into series to stop because of the investment sum no longer eligible for financing. With the confirmation by the presidency of the Council of Ministers on 15 November 1979 the final had come out for the project.

Meaning satellite

At the beginning of its production the satellite was celebrated still as East German "peoples "- car and was actually considered to many families with middle income as entrance into the automobiles world. In western countries the development from Zwickau was not evenly admired, but recognized nevertheless.

When an advancement satellite however was missing, the picture changed itself. The car became the symbol for the stagnating economy of the GDR and for the drillingness of the political guidance, which prevented a new model obviously.

For lack of alternatives - apart from waiting castle out iron oh - the order books were nevertheless overful. The planned economy tilted over to the lack economy. The car was in the GDR a safe investment of funds: the waiting lists were in such a manner long that several years of old cars on the using market still to the factory price could be also again-sold. Therefore practically each had a registration either for a satellite or waiting castle to run - which the waiting lists of naturally still far extended.

A well maintained satellite was considered - despite its obvious technical deficits - as status symbol. The procurement of spare parts, tires and even car batteries cost comparatively little money, for it however all the more trouble. Into the 1980ern the ratio of the parts in Zwickau, produced as spare part, already amounted to over 30 %. Since however in the meantime each second satellite was older than ten years, lack always prevailed.

The image of the car received by the lack economy broke in 1990 almost over night. Even with Volkswagen, which planned since December 1989 with IFA in one "joint venture "the sales new satellite, one had not counted on such a failure "1.1 ". one found 601er, which had been maintained over years, as black shut down wrecks almost everywhere in the GDR. However the almost quantity of the produced cars prevented that the satellite completely disappeared from the traffic.

The first satellite fan clubs, which were sceptically regarded however in the public already, formed at the beginning of the 1990er. Only with the years the scene could free itself from the image to consist of eternal-of yesterday. Today exist numerous associations and communities of interests, which dedicate themselves to the satellite - also outside of the new Lands of the Federal Republic. Rarer remarks, like the old 500/600er or the NVA jeeps reach with auctions regularly over 1.000 "€. To the official Trabi meeting in Zwickau annually approximately 20,000 visitors come. At the end of its eventful history "the Trabi attained "apparently finally cult status.

(Old timer market 10/2004, in a comparison between the VOLKSWAGEN beetle and the satellite)
