Systembolaget (colloquially also systemet) is a national company in Sweden, which has a monopoly over the retail trade of beverages with an alcohol content of more than 3.5 percent by volume. The company as an attempt to contain the consumption of alcohol in Sweden based. The thought was that it would have a company without interest of profit more easily to use different controllers e.g. the Motboken, a kind ration map.
In municipalities, in which no Systembolaget business is present, there is partial licensed business, over which goods can be ordered with Systembolaget.
The sales in the Systembolaget business is strongly reglementiert by laws. Like that no quantity discounts may be granted and bundlings ("Six luggage") are just as forbidden. Also no unequal treatment of individual products may take place. Thus it is for example not possible to offer parts of the assortment cooled.
In later years the right of existence of the Sytembolaget was placed in question, because the monopoly does not have longer a as large effect as in former times, since handicaps were omitted with the trade with neighbour states after the European Union entry. Also there is a very large market for smuggled goods and burned liquor , with the organized criminality exerted by it. Despite the monopolistic position the market share is only with approx. 30%.
History
Liquor comes to Sweden

Systembolaget and the European Union
- 1993 - The European Union commission communicates to the Swedish government that Systembolaget can still work, even if Sweden joins the European Union.
- 1994 - A new alcohol law is issued.
- 1995 - As a result of the European Union commission resolution the monopoly is waived of Vin & Sprit on import, export, production and wholesale. At the same time Systembolaget loses the monopoly with the sales of alcohol at restaurants.
