History of the GSM Mobilfunknetze in Switzerland

As the first mobile net of Switzerland 1993 Swisscom took mobile in March (at that time: Telecom) its enterprise up. During approximately 5 years Swisscom was the only mobile net of Switzerland; compared with other countries there was only very late a concession assignment to further offerers.

In December 1998 sunrise stepped (at that time: diAx) as second portable radio offerers with favourable prices and innovative products into Swiss market. The competition around customers led to a first larger price slide. Initially the net was present however only along motorways and in urban areas. By the continuous development of the net also in rural regions reached sunrise (respectable diAx) soon a better cover, v.a. also by the fact that the SBB net could be used as Backbone.

A half year later, in June 1999, started orange with a large Werbekampagne with its net. This covered only urban areas at the beginning however; in far regions the net was not yet developed. Owing to national the Roamings with Swisscom orange had contrary to sunrise away from beginning also in edge regions an acceptable cover. In July 2003 orange created the step into independence and terminated that national Roaming with Swisscom after over 4 years.

On 18 December 2003 received two new portable radio offerers, Tele2 and in&phone, one license each for the enterprise of a GSM Mobilfunknetzes. In June 2005 Tele2 took up the enterprise of its town center net in the city Zurich. Further town center nets are to time in the structure. In the middle of 2006 is to be taken up the line operation to Berne and Geneva, later also to Basel and Lausanne.

Service Provider

Momentarily 6 Provider are actively active on Swiss portable radio market, about which most simple Prepaid products with uniform tariffs for private customers offer.

Provider played a subordinated role in Switzerland until in the year 2005 only.

Since that 1. May 2000 offers a Prepaid product for its fixed net customers to Tele2. Tele2-Kunden receive here a Prepaid map, which they can load with any amount. The loaded amount is then loaded the Tele2-Festnetzrechnung following on it. The product of Tele2 is not available in the free trade, why Tele2 does not rank among the Providern with without reservation accessible products.

In the year 2005 there was a trueful Provider Boom.Am in Switzerland 15. May 2005 made yallo the entrance as first Provider into the portable radio market. The sister enterprise of sunrise marketed its product initially only on-line one; meanwhile it in addition, off-line are accessible.

The entrance of two largest Swiss detail trading ventures Coop and Migros into the portable radio market released a price fight between the two new offerers with the publication of the tariffs on 12 September 2005. Thus within fewer hours the minute prices were mutually undercut by M-budget mobile and CoopMobile.

On 16 December 2005 Cablecom started in co-operation with sunrise its Prepaid offer cablecom mobile with minute prices, which were deeper up to 20% over than the existing Prepaid tariffs. The entrance of Cablecom released the largest price fight between the Providern. In several rounds all Provider lowered its minute prices and undercut themselves mutually. This led to the fact that the Prepaid Minutentarif fell for the first time with all Providern under 40 black horses.

In December 2005 abalon telecom with abamobile launched as first Provider excluding offers for business customers. On 16 January 2006 mobile zone with mobile zone followed net for the first time also with Postpaid offers.

Due to the continuous price fight under the service Providern the prices will probably in the future continue to sink still. This shows that in Swiss portable radio market is to be quite moved some more.
