Swifff is a software to the knowledge management in virtual knowledge areas, it developed in the context of a project group of the University of Paderborn.

This project group developed among other things from a seminar, which was accomplished in the summer semester 2003 in the AG computer science and society, University of Paderborn. The seminar carried the name "knowledge management in spontaneous networks (WisN)" and by some current project group participants was visited. Within the seminar was tried to develop a network for cooperative working on WLAN basis spontaneously and in line with standard usage to evaluate so the software available within this range. It turned out fast that hardly useful Tools for this task exists. This should change the project group.

A software solution for the realization of virtual knowledge areas is to be provided. But the entire complex of related topics in a seminar was lit up. Particularly attention was dedicated to the range "location Awareness", to this found however after recommending our responsible persons for the time being no entrance into the project. The open beginning of Swifff permits it however to also later add this functionality. Entire application is realized in Java 1.4. It consists of two components, which are separately - also on different devices - executable. The core realizes thereby persistence as well as the network layer, according to GUI the representation of the knowledge areas as well as the interaction with the user. For communication among themselves RMI is used. The internal representation of all objects as well as the exchange of the Peers (core core) happen in XML.Als key technology at Adhoc cross-linking are used JXTA. Considerably for this decision that was Swifff philosophy similar open beginning of JXTA, the scaling barness and/or platform independence, the good availability as well as not least the Java compatibility.
